The 5 Best Dehydrator in Canada

The 5 best dehydrator in Canada in 2022 – Comparison, guide and opinion

A little treat is always delightful: it makes you feel better and regains a little energy.

When we are concerned about our health, we spontaneously go for dried fruits. But those sold commercially are often loaded with sugar or very harmful additives, making them addictive and dangerous.

The solution is to acquire a dehydrator and select and dry good quality fruits yourself.

Thus, you preserve the vitamins and the nutrients, and you escape the added sugars of the industrial products. You can indulge yourself and give yourself gourmet breaks without feeling guilty.

That’s not the only use for dehydrators: they’re also helpful if you enjoy cooking, perfect for making delicious jerky or drying herbs.

They also allow you to embark on more original recipes, such as the now-famous fruit rolls. They also avoid waste.

However, brands are aware that different buyer profiles have varying requirements and needs.

As a result, they offer a wide variety of models. It becomes challenging to determine which dehydrator is best suited to your needs.

That’s why we analyzed and then compared 41 dehydrators sold in Canada for nearly 39 hours and took into account the opinions of 439 consumers.

Our favourite model is the Nesco FD-75AC for its large capacity and versatility following our latest update.

What we think of the Nesco FD-75A

Although this device comes with five trays, you can buy them separately. You can stack a dozen in total, producing plenty of fruit rolls, jerky or other treats for a family.

The power offered here is 600 watts. The noise produced turns out to be quite bearable. The execution speed is noticeably above average: of course, it takes a few hours to achieve proper drying, but most of the time, you avoid leaving the appliance on and walking a full half day.

It is particularly effective for jerky; Nesco is aware of this and has included three sachets of dedicated spices. For other types of food, you have two solid supports, and two mesh supports: versatility is ensured for soups, herbs, fruits, vegetables and meat.

The basic dimensions of the device are 34.9 * 56.2 * 35.2 cm, i.e. 13.74 * 22.13 * 13.86 in, for a weight of 3.52 kg, or 7.76 lb. Note, therefore, that it is not compact nor easy to store, especially if you have chosen to buy additional trays: it is better to provide a dedicated place for it.

The ease of use is very significant: everything is done using a button on the top of the device. You can set the temperature from 35 to 70°C or 95 to 160°F. On the other hand, we regret the absence of an on-off button; it is necessary to unplug the dehydrator to carry out a possible check.

As far as product life is concerned, it is several years if properly maintained, if you regularly clean the trays and the unit according to the instructions in the user manual.

However, it is an ideal format if you want to delight the taste buds of as many people as possible daily. This dehydrator comes with six 30.5*33 cm (12*13 inch) stainless steel trays, allowing you to dry plenty of food in one go.

This dehydrator also has a 27.2*30 cm (10.7*11.8 inch) mesh grid and a 28.7*32.5 cm (11.8 inches) fruit roll tray. 3*12.8 inch). These are easy to clean; just pop them in the dishwasher.

One of the main advantages of the Cosori CP267-FD, and not the least, is its quiet operation. Indeed, the fans and heating elements do not emit any nuisance.

A touch and digital control panel allow you to set the dehydration time you want, up to 48h in 30 min increments. You can also adjust the thermostat between 35 and 74°C, or 95 to 165°F.

  • Price: 3.0 out of 5.0 stars

Although quite expensive, this dehydrator offers you the possibility of preparing a multitude of varied fruits and dried foods. The settings are straightforward to make and the device – although bulky – is secure and silent.

Our choice for a budget dehydrator

A good price-capacity compromise

Suppose you are alone or with two people. Still, you don’t have a particular space problem, and you want to benefit from a very affordable dehydrator that still offers an exciting capacity. In that case, the Salton DH1454 may be of interest to you. On the web, you can most often find it for around $50 to $55.

Summary of Salton DH1454 Features

  • Fast, space-saving and ideal for one or two people.
  • Good capacity-size ratio.
  • Dries most foods in less than 8 hours.
  • 5 trays and holders for herbs and liquids.
  • 33*33*12.1cm/12.99*12.99*8.31in.
  • 3.08 kg / 6.79 lbs.

Photo and video demonstration of the Salton DH1454

What we think of the Salton DH1454

This device remains quite compact: its dimensions are 33 * 33 * 12.1 cm, or 12.99 * 12.99 * 8.31 in and it weighs 3.08 kg, or 6.79 lb. Therefore, you can acquire it even if your kitchen is not extremely spacious: it can be stored without too much difficulty in a cupboard or on a shelf.

The capacity is quite significant for a device in this price range, with the five trays offering quite reasonable space. Plus, a sturdy stand and a mesh stand are included with your purchase for making fruit rolls or drying herbs. It usually takes 4 to 8 hours for a satisfactory result.

Versatility is ensured by temperature settings that correspond to current standards: between 35 to 70°C or 95 to 160°F. It is, therefore, possible to prepare jerky or dried fruit at your convenience, whether from an ecological perspective, to limit waste or simply for pure pleasure.

Unfortunately, there is no timer, but an on-off button is present, and the transparent trays allow you to monitor the progress of your food. It should also be noted that consumers’ health has been adequately taken into account since it is a 100% bisphenol A-free product.

Unfortunately, the plastic design is not of good solidity. It must be recognized that the general durability is lower than average, less than a year and that the trays tend to break far too quickly. It is, therefore, not the reference that seems ideal for particularly intensive use.

Pros and Cons of the Salton DH1454

Pros

  • Very affordable
  • Excellent speed of execution

Cons

  • Disappointing build quality

Our openion on the Salton DH1454

  • Efficiency: 4.0 out of 5.0 stars
  • Design: 5.0 out of 5.0 stars
  • Price: 5.0 out of 5.0 stars
  • Quality: 2.0 out of 5.0 stars

While you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better price-performance ratio than the Salton DH1454, keep in mind that its durability lags far behind the competition. By investing twenty or even ten dollars more, you can easily find a product that will demonstrate greater robustness.

Other alternatives to buying a dehydrator

The accessible and versatile solution

The Hamilton Beach 32100C can most often be purchased for around $65 to $70 on the various merchant platforms. You then benefit from an efficient and easy-to-use dehydrator, which will meet the expectations of the vast majority of consumers.

Hamilton Beach 32100C Feature Summary

  • The perfect combination of reasonable price and versatility.
  • 5 trays, holders for herbs and liquids.
  • 500 watts.
  • 29.8 * 36.8 * 33cm / 11.73 * 14.49 * 12.99in.
  • 3.63 kg / 10 lbs.
  • Limited warranty: 5 years.

Photo and video demonstration of the Hamilton Beach 32100C

What we think of the Hamilton Beach 32100C

This device weighs 3.63 kg, which is equivalent to 8 lbs, and measures 29.8 * 36.8 * 33 cm, or 11.73 * 14.49 * 12.99 in. It’s pretty compact for a dehydrator, although it can be bulky if you’re short on space. The design is not very inspired, but it is not embarrassing: it allows the product to be more discreet.

However, it is not the case for the fan: it is noisy. The power of the machine is 500 watts: it is normal for it to be audible, but we consider that this drawback could still have been mitigated.

Also, among the shortcomings to be aware of, note that drying your food can take some time: more than indicated in the recipes offered by Hamilton Beach. Having to wait 12 hours is not that uncommon.

However, this does not detract from the effectiveness of the product. It has, first, five trays which allow you to prepare many dried fruits, for example, simultaneously. You also find a fine mesh holder for drying herbs and a solid holder for dehydrating liquids in the box.

You can monitor the drying progress through the transparent lid, but unfortunately, this only applies to the top tray. You don’t have to do anything once the machine is started; the airflow is continuous. The temperature is adjustable from 38 to 70°C or 100 to 160°F using the buttons on the front.

These also allow you to set the timer, up to 48 hours, with automatic shutdown. An LCD screen will enable you to read all the valuable information. Product life is decent, it’s plastic but pretty solid, and Hamilton Beach offers a 5-year limited warranty.

Pros and Cons of the Hamilton Beach 32100C

Pros

  • Affordable and versatile
  • Very honest durability for the price

Cons

  • Noisy

Our opinion on the Hamilton Beach 32100C

  • Efficiency: 4.0 out of 5.0 stars
  • Design: 5.0 out of 5.0 stars
  • Price: 5.0 out of 5.0 stars
  • Quality: 5.0 out of 5.0 stars

The Hamilton Beach 32100C is a dehydrator that may lack efficiency in the eyes of some buyers. But if you know how to be patient, it is both easy to use and versatile. It is an excellent option if you like dried food but do not want to spend much money on it.

Created the model to fit in smaller areas.

Dehydrators are not necessarily used every day and often take up a lot of space. With the NutriChef PKFD06, the brand wanted to offer a compact product, which is very pleasant for people with moderate needs and limited space, often accessible for around $55 online.

Summary of NutriChef PKFD06 features

  • The most compact.
  • 5 small transparent and easy to clean trays.
  • Very easy to store if needed.
  • 27.9 * 25.9 * 27.9cm / 10.98 * 10.2 * 10.98in
  • 8.44 kg / 18.61 lbs.

Photo and video demonstration of the NutriChef PKFD06

What we think of the NutriChef PKFD06

The first advantage of the small size of this product is the ease of cleaning offered: you only need a few minutes to make the main unit and the trays look new. Regular maintenance is facilitated, which increases durability.

The device is very light since it weighs only 1.41 kg or 3.11 lb. Its dimensions, meanwhile, are 27.9 * 25.9 * 27.9 cm, which is equivalent to 10.98 * 10.2 * 10.98 in. Therefore, you can store it easily, and even, if you feel like it, take it with you on vacation or during a business trip.

Another very notable advantage is the noise, which is highly reduced. Nevertheless, this is explained by a much more modest power than some competing dehydrators: patience is essential. Depending on the food to be dried, it may be necessary to let the product operate for almost a full day.

It’s not necessarily annoying because of its discretion, but it would have been nicer to have a timer. The lack of automatic shutdown can also be somewhat reassuring for some consumers.

There are two buttons: one switching on and off, the other for adjusting the temperature. The proposed maximum value is 80°C or 180°F. The versatility offered is quite correct; however, due to the compact size of the object, the capacity is lower: it is suitable for one to two people.

It’s a machine whose full potential is exploited when you live alone or in pairs and use it mainly to fight against waste. If you want to prepare dried foods for pure indulgence, it may be better to go for a larger capacity.

Pros and Cons of NutriChef PKFD06

Pros

  • Quiet

Cons

  • Slow operation

Our opinion on the NutriChef PKFD06

  • Efficiency: 3.0 out of 5.0 stars
  • Design: 5.0 out of 5.0 stars
  • Price: 5.0 out of 5.0 stars
  • Quality: 4.0 out of 5.0 stars

The NutriChef PKFD06 is the ideal solution if you live in a small apartment or studio and want to avoid waste without spending a significant budget on your dehydrator. It has a few shortcomings, notably its low capacity, but its price relatively well compensates them.

The most designer choice

You want to equip yourself with a dehydrator, but what matters to you above all, beyond considerations of capacity and value for money, is that it can integrate into a modern and refined decoration? In this case, you can get the Excalibur 2400, often offered for around $150 online.

Excalibur 2400 Features Summary

  • The most decorative in a modern kitchen.
  • Very sober, elegant black colour, original square appearance.
  • 4 trays.
  • 41.33 * 33 * 16.5cm / 16.26 * 12.99 * 6.5in.
  • 3.63 kg / 8 lbs.

Photo and video demonstration of the Excalibur 2400

What we think of the Excalibur 2400

It is essentially by its very successful design that this dehydrator stands out from its competitors. It is a beautiful black, and the trays are much more elegant than most competing models. It is an excellent solution if you want to avoid other devices’ plastic and low-end effect.

Its place is, in our opinion, prominently on a counter, but it is nevertheless compact enough to be stored in a cupboard if you wish. It measures 41.33 * 33 * 16.5 cm, or 16.26 * 12.99 * 6.5 in and weighs 3.63 kg, or 8 lb.

However, its qualities hardly mask annoying flaws in this price range. First, it would have been very desirable to have a timer available. Then, if the temperature can be adjusted from 35 to 68°C, that is to say, 60 to 155°F, the precision is not optimal, and you will have to adapt gradually.

Moreover, the power is minimal, only 220 watts. However, the fan is noisy. You have four trays where you can place your food: in all, the available surface is 0.37 m², which is equivalent to 4 sq ft. Considering the price, it is legitimate to expect more.

Nevertheless, the Excalibur 2400 remains an excellent long-term investment: its durability is well in line with its price, and the manufacturer offers a five-year limited warranty. Note, however, that this is less durable than other high-end but honest dehydrators by a few years.

Of course, this only applies to the condition of regular cleaning, which is relatively simple. It may seem a little more tedious than on other products due to the design, especially for the maintenance of the main unit, but it remains short.

Pros and Cons of the Excalibur 2400

Pros

  • Looks great on a counter
  • Above average durability

Cons

  • Lack of features

Our opinion on the Excalibur 2400

  • Efficiency: 3.0 out of 5.0 stars
  • Design: 5.0 out of 5.0 stars
  • Price: 2.0 out of 5.0 stars
  • Quality: 5.0 out of 5.0 stars

The Excalibur 2400 is very interesting and would probably be perfect for a large number of buyers if it were not so expensive. In its current price positioning, it is better to be interested in it only when it is on promotion or if you are more demanding on aesthetics than performance.

What we think of the Chefman RJ43-5Q-6T

This dehydrator from Chefman takes up space in the kitchen, but it allows you to prepare as many dried foods as possible, all in less than a day. Indeed, you can set the cooking time up to 7:30 p.m.

You have the possibility of integrating many slices of fruit into the device, thanks in particular to its six trays, made of plastic but devoid of BPA. With this machine, you can also make herbs or dry meat.

Touch settings make your life easier, allowing you to make precise settings for cooking time and temperature. There are 14 preset thermostats to choose from, ranging from 35°C to 70°C (or 95°F to 158°F).

The design of this dehydrator has been thought out, according to its designers, to ensure optimal airflow during the process, to obtain evenly dried slices of fruit or meat, avoiding any problem of overcooking.

If you want to watch everything that happens on this device regularly, a transparent window offers you this possibility. This desiccant is safe and energy-efficient with automatic shutdown once the timer runs out.

Given the size of this dehydrator, we could expect a lot of power, but the device ultimately remains in the average of what we find on the market with 480 watts. If you need a device that can quietly and efficiently dehydrate a whole range of foods, the VVinRC is your tool. One of its main strengths is its discretion; it makes little noise.

Summary of VVinRC Dehydrator Features

  • Quiet
  • Suitable for all foods, including fish

  • 5.44 kg (12 lbs)

Photo demonstration of the VVinRC Dehydrator

What we think of the VVinRC Dehydrator

At first glance, this dehydrator may seem slightly bulky with its dimensions of 35*34*28 cm (13.78*13.39*11.02 inches) and may not be suitable if you have a reasonably small space. It is still relatively light, at only 5.44 kg (12 pounds).

However, its ample space allows you, thanks to its six trays and mesh grid, to dry a multitude of foods in a single procedure, whether of vegetable or animal origin. BPA-free, these elements are straightforward to maintain by putting them in the dishwasher.

This dehydrator helps retain the most vitamins and flavours possible, whether drying fruits, vegetables, herbs, meats, fish, shrimp, bread or mushrooms.

Thanks to the intelligent control of your appliance, you can choose a dehydration temperature between 30°C (86°F) and 90°C (194°F). You can select the duration of the process up to 24h, with increments of 30 minutes.

Its power of 400 watts may seem low to you, but on the other hand, this device saves energy. The ventilation system is silent, and the heating elements allow you to dry your food evenly.

There are very few essential plastic elements in this dehydrator, the device and the trays are made of stainless aluminium, and the window is made of glass. It gives it more robustness and allows it to last over time.

Pros and Cons of the VVinRC Dehydrator

Pros

  • Little noisy
  • Big capacity
  • Robust
  • No BPA

Cons

  • small power

Our verdict on the VVinRC Dehydrator

  • Efficiency: 4.0 out of 5.0 stars
  • Design: 5.0 out of 5.0 stars
  • Price: 4.0 out of 5.0 stars
  • Quality: 5.0 out of 5.0 stars

Although this dehydrator uses a relatively small amount of power, it provides a comprehensive service for all of your food. The six trays allow you to produce many dried fruits in a single day.

Versatility and silence in one device

The Samson SB106 is to offer both high efficiency and quiet operation. To benefit from these two elements simultaneously, you must be ready to invest: this dehydrator is often offered at a price close to $170 on the various trading platforms.

Samson SB106 Features Summary

  • The uncompromising top-of-the-range device.
  • Quiet.
  • Large trays allow a good production capacity.
  • 400 watts.
  • 45.1*31.8*34.3cm/17.76*12.52*13.5in.
  • 5.47 kg / 12.06 lbs.
  • Guarantee: five years on certain parts.

Photo and video demonstration of the Samson SB106

What we think of the Samson SB106

Let’s first talk about what we think is the main flaw of the device: despite a high-end price positioning, the power offered can be disappointing since it is only 400 watts. It is, therefore, sometimes necessary to be more patient than on models available for less.

However, the effectiveness remains honest: it takes less than a day whatever the food is prepared. You also have a timer adjustable from 30 minutes to 19 hours and 30 minutes, and you can increase it in 30-minute increments using the buttons on the front of the device.

The general design is to be welcomed because it turns out to be relatively intelligent: the 5 trays, transparent and designed without bisphenol A, are inserted from the front. A transparent lid allows you to check how each food has progressed, avoiding potential mistakes while providing good light protection.

The central unit is made of aluminium. It is notably bulky since it measures 45.1 * 31.8 * 34.3 cm, equivalent to 17.76 * 12.52 * 13.5 in for 5.47 kg or 12.06 lb. If you are short of space, we advise you to orient yourself towards another reference.

Solidity is at the rendezvous, and Samson offers a five-year warranty on most sensitive parts. You can quickly expect to keep this dehydrator for many years as long as you take care of its maintenance. Maintenance of both the trays and the unit is quite simple.

The temperature can be set between 35 and 70 degrees Celsius (95 and 158 degrees Fahrenheit). Tray dimensions: 33.02 * 30.48 cm, or 13 * 12 in., guarantee versatility and allow for high production capacity, as well.

Pros and Cons of the Samson SB106

Pros

  • Production capacity
  • Silent execution

Cons

  • Price

Our verdict on the Samson SB106

  • Efficiency: 4.0 out of 5.0 stars
  • Design: 4.0 out of 5.0 stars
  • Price: 3.0 out of 5.0 stars
  • Quality: 5.0 out of 5.0 stars

The Samson SB106 device has no significant drawbacks in terms of operation and is quiet: if it is a little slower than some competitors, its large capacity compensates. On the other hand, it is costly and, above all, massive; it can be challenging to find a place for it in your kitchen.

The reliable family option

Are you looking for an easy-to-use electric food dehydrator with enough room to cook healthy snacks for the whole family?
The Gourmia GFD1950 stands out with its sizeable 9-tray capacity, transparent door to better see the ingredients, a timer and digital controls to adjust the temperature, and a horizontal diffusion system for better cooking.

Summary of Gourmia GFD1950 Features

  • 9 trays
  • leather sheet and drip sheet
  • 360° air circulation
  • ETL certified and BPA free
  • 8-setting digital temperature control
  • transparent door
  • Timer and automatic shutdown

Photo and video demonstration of the Gourmia GFD1950

What we think of the Gourmia GFD1950

Make sure you have room on the kitchen counter, but here’s an option that should allow you to prepare recipes for the whole family and stock up for the winter.

This electric dehydrator can hold no less than 9 trays, giving enough space for family quantities and making enough healthy snacks to feed a regiment.

You will indeed have to experiment with the trays by the recipe; we will not always fill all nine, but it is still convenient and cost-effective. The dehydrator’s efficiency is undeniable thanks to horizontal diffusion, which evenly distributes heat via a fan at the dehydrator’s bottom.

It’s often the fan noise that can be noticed compared to a smaller, vertical dehydrator, but in the case of this GFD1950, you have to admit that the machine is relatively unobtrusive.

We love the see-through door, which appeals to kids to peek through and allows for a look at foods being dehydrated without having to open and ruin the temperature, although it does come with a downside.

Indeed, this door slides and fits a bit like a separate piece, it is not attached like a conventional door, which makes it a little less practical to close, and sometimes you have to get used to making sure to secure the closure and therefore the heat of the dehydrator.

It is finally on the side of the temperature settings that we find certain limitations. The thermostat doesn’t go any further than 19.5 hours, which may or may not be a problem, depending on your recipes.

But above all, the different temperatures are preset but not adjustable: you can choose between the 8 settings between 95°F / 35°C and 158°F / 70°C, but you will not be able to lower or raise the settings a few degrees.

Another detail that remains personal to the appreciation and use, taking nothing away from the excellent quality and efficiency of this large family dehydrator!

  • Fairly quiet
  • transparent door

Cons

Our opinion on the Gourmia GFD1950

  • Efficiency: 5.0 out of 5.0 stars
  • Design: 4.0 out of 5.0 stars
  • Price: 4.0 out of 5.0 stars
  • Quality: 4.0 out of 5.0 stars

We like this Gourmia GFD1950 dehydrator because it is large but relatively quiet, perfect for the family or large batches of dried fruit; the transparent glass is practical even if you have to get used to it. Shame about the temperature settings, but if you’re not up to the degree and stay in recipes below 20 hours (the case of many recipes, in fact), here is an excellent choice for a large kitchen and family!

What we think of the VivoHome 8 Trays ‎VH517

First, you have to give a point to VivoHome for the design and the relatively successful general appearance of this dehydrator, which is not the case for all dehydrators.

With its stainless steel ends, transparent trays, and LED control screen with a small round button to adjust the temperature, this rectangular dehydrator imposes on the kitchen counter.

In addition, it is relatively simple, very quickly taken in hand, and easily cleaned since the trays can be put in the dishwasher, made of quality BPA-free plastic, even if the plastic retains its limits of robustness, to be treated with precaution.

Excellent for the price. I’ve made apples and turkey jerky so far, and it works great and is very easy to use. The temperature only goes up to 158 degrees F, so I sometimes use the traditional oven at 175 degrees F to finish the recipe for the jerky. The result is excellent!

LISA

Warning: like many vertical type dehydrators, especially at entry and mid-range, the heat distribution can be uneven, and the last plates at the top will necessarily be less hot than those at the bottom.

Therefore, it is romantic to think that you will be able to dehydrate 8 trays of bananas with equal cooking; you will have to tame the machine and do so, especially since the 400 watts provide correct heat on the power side is not so strong.

It is, therefore, a dehydrator that can sometimes take a little longer on specific recipes and which will be less recommended for those requiring a high temperature, such as jerky, although with a bit of patience and, for example, by finishing drying in the oven. Traditional, several users have obtained excellent results.

In short, like most dehydrators, the appreciation remains personal. It requires time to adapt, but this VivoHome is undoubtedly about its quality of performance and the possibilities of recipes for a reasonable price.

In addition, a complete recipe and the instruction booklet are provided, even if the temperatures are Celsius while the machine is in Fahrenheit!

Pros and Cons of the VivoHome 8 Trays ‎VH517

Pros

  • The design and general appearance
  • Ease of handling
  • Trays are dishwasher safe
  • The number of recipes in the manual

Cons

  • It lacks a bit of power
  • Uneven heat
  • Celsius recipe book, Fahrenheit machine

Our opinion on the VivoHome 8 Trays ‎VH517

  • Efficiency: 4.0 out of 5.0 stars
  • Design: 4.0 out of 5.0 stars
  • Price: 4.0 out of 5.0 stars
  • Quality: 4.0 out of 5.0 stars

A reasonable price, a good intermediate size and good performance for this VivoHome 8 Trays ‎VH517 dehydrator: we like it a lot; in addition, it is beautiful, even if you will have to learn to cook with it, especially for heat distribution which isn’t the same on top, and potency which may not be the best for jerky, it still opens up a vast range of dehydrated culinary possibilities for a reasonable price!

Our approach and method

All the recommendations we make on 5bestchoices.com result from several weeks or months of research, comparisons, consumer opinion analyses, and, if necessary, interviews with experts and scientists.

We recommend products that are not necessarily expensive or trendy, but rather ones that will perform admirably daily and pass all safety, reliability, and efficiency tests with flying colours while also offering an appealing quality/price ratio.

The products we recommend to you are the ones we would want to buy, and the ones we would also choose for our friends and family.

Things to know before buying a dehydrator

Before purchasing a dehydrator, try to discuss it with each household member: perhaps some will express desires that you had not thought of. Then, take the time to reflect, and determine your needs to avoid investing more than necessary.

Foods to dehydrate

Dehydrators are initially designed for making dried fruits. All devices, including entry-level ones, offer decent performance for drying fruits and vegetables if you want to dehydrate herbs, liquids, or seeds, up to your budget.

The desired quantities

If you are alone or in a couple, a machine with a very modest capacity will likely be more than enough for you. It is, therefore, preferable to orient yourself towards low-capacity models, which generally combine attractive manufacturing quality and reasonable cost. If you are a complete family, be prepared to invest more.

Your space

A dehydrator rarely runs continuously. If you have a bloodless kitchen and a small counter, avoid buying a large appliance that will quickly get on your nerves, or make sure it can be easily stored in a cupboard or on a shelf.

Security requirements

Dehydrators are electrical appliances. Only buy products that you are sure to meet North American electrical standards; if in doubt, use caution. Systematically avoid sites on which the product’s origin is not determinable.

Our selection criteria for buying a dehydrator

Once you have defined your needs, you must take an interest in the product’s technical characteristics. These will allow you to determine an objective value for money, weighted according to your requirements.

The price

The entry-level price for dehydrators is around $50, and the most expensive are generally offered for $150 or even $200. Intermediate products are often available at prices between $70 and $100. Keep in mind that promotions and price drops are pretty frequent.

The temperature setting

A good temperature range allows you to dehydrate a more significant number of different foods. You benefit on almost all devices from the possibility of adjustment between 37 and 70 °C, i.e. 100 and 160 °F: this is sufficient for jerky, fruits, vegetables and herbs.

Temperature adjustment is usually made using a knob on the top or front of the unit. Beyond the minimum and maximum values, remember to check the level of precision offered.

Most dehydrators work the same way: circulating hot air through a fan.

Contrary to popular belief, whether it is placed above or below the trays has only a marginal effect on productivity.

Additional features

While all dehydrators allow temperature adjustment, not all have a timer. Yet it is a handy feature that gives you both ease of use and peace of mind, especially when combined with the machine’s ability to stop automatically.

Ease of maintenance

Generally, the bottom of the appliance is designed to receive any crumbs that may have fallen: all it takes is a wipe of the cloth to make it look new. The trays are also often easy to clean. However, a particular design can make the task more tedious.

Trays and accessories

The first thing important with the trays is their number: most often, there are five. Additional trays can be purchased separately on some devices to increase the initial capacity.

The second key point is their size. Unfortunately, this is only rarely indicated by the manufacturers: trust the images, but especially the comments of Internet users. Do not hesitate to ask questions directly in the online stores’ dedicated spaces.

When the capacity is indicated, it can be demonstrated in different ways: by weight or area. Be that as it may, remember to consider the space between the trays: this can limit your creativity.

Some dehydrators are sold with specific supports: a support with a very light mesh structure for drying herbs and solid support for liquids such as soups or pressed fruit for rolls. If these brackets are not included, versatility is mechanically diminished.

Finally, the material matters. Plastic is generally chosen: check then that there is no bisphenol-A. The solidity of the trays is variable, they are never highly robust, but sometimes they are too fragile, which is stressful to clean them and imposes to be cautious.

The weight and dimensions

If you sometimes make long trips, whether, for your holidays or work, you may be tempted to buy an exceptionally light device that you can take with you. If the use of the dehydrator is exclusively domestic, this question is not fundamental.

However, the dimensions are always critical. Indeed, some products can be notably bulky. When you buy a dehydrator that takes up space and can be noisy, the risk of being disappointed is excellent. So take some measurements and make a choice that suits your kitchen.

Design

Since it is not always easy to store a dehydrator, the device often sits on the counter. It is, in this case, very desirable that you like its appearance. Unfortunately, polished aesthetics often come with higher prices, but it can be worth it.

Some details are also appreciated: for example, a structure and transparent trays allow you to check how your food is regularly doing. But it also offers less protection against light.

Beyond the aesthetic notion, the design can also refer to ergonomics: are the buttons placed in easily accessible places, an LCD screen and the grip, do you think? Is she easy? Of course, this is essentially a matter of taste: choose a model whose use seems intuitive to you.

The power

In theory, the more powerful a dehydrator is, the faster it is. However, since capacity and overall design come into play, horsepower should be considered an indicator rather than an absolute value. It is expressed in watts: the average is around 400 to 500 watts.

We hope this guide has helped you see more clearly and better understand how to determine if a dehydrator has an attractive quality-price ratio beyond our selection. Don’t forget that chatting with other Internet users is the best way to obtain reliable information.
