How to install a stacked washer and dryer? The Ultimate Guide
Are you running out of space and want to save space in your laundry room?
Opting for a superposition of the two machines is an excellent option!
It will help optimize space and keep a well-ordered laundry room.
However, some prerequisites are essential to keep in mind when installing.
This article gives you some tips on installing a stacked washer and dryer and enjoying more space in your home.
Things to check before stacking your washer and dryer
Level the floor
Before stacking your washing machine with your dryer, ensure the floor is flat.
To do this, use a spirit level to check the floor’s stability.
Have a washer and dryer from the same manufacturer
We recommend buying appliances made by the same manufacturer and designed as a washer-dryer set.
Be aware that stacking devices cost a little more and that you will also have to think about repairs. Still, their integration will be facilitated only if the models are entirely different.
Own a front-loading washing machine
Next, look at the type of washer you have. Suppose it is a vertical loading model (from the top). In that case, the opening is from the top, and it is therefore impossible to place another appliance above.
It is because only front-loading washers work as part of a stack.
For example, this 5.2 cubic foot high-efficiency front-loading Whirlpool model, available in our buying guide, is perfect for stacking; all you have to do is find a dryer from the same brand!
Regarding the choice of the dryer, do not choose one larger and heavier than the washer: it could have difficulty supporting the weight of the appliance.
Put the washer under the dryer.
When spinning, the washing machine emits vibrations, which can destabilize it.
Therefore, it is dangerous to place it on the dryer, and always preferable to place it on the floor.
Installing the dryer on the washing machine: instructions
1. Take the measurements
Take the measurements of the space where you want to install your stacked washer and dryer.
We advise you to leave 2 or 3 inches on each side of the machines to facilitate air and heat circulation.
2. Use a user kit
To install your stacked washer and dryer, it is not enough to simply put them on top of each other.
You will need an installation kit (or stacking kit or hardware) compatible with the devices you wish to purchase.
These kits consist of hardware, leveling feet, and installation instructions most of the time.
3. Install the washer and dryer
- First, consult the manufacturer’s installation instructions before you begin;
- With the help of another person, lift the dryer onto the washer;
- Use your installation kit compatible with the brand of your appliances, and adequately and securely attach the dryer to the washer;
- Connect hot and cold water, gas, and dryer hose. Check that the water inlet hoses have flat washers on both ends to avoid leaks.
The washer must be connected to the water faucets using the new water inlet hoses with the flat washers.
Do not use old hoses or hoses without washers.
- Connect your household appliances to an electrical outlet;
- Push your stacked washer dryer towards the wall and remember to leave 2-3 inches between the wall and your appliances;
- Make sure everything is working by doing a wash cycle without clothes;
- Check that everything is held in place despite the vibration, then test the electric dryer.
Before installing your machines, choose a location with a 220-volt electrical outlet where you can plug in the power cord, access to water, a water drain point, and an outlet for the back of the dryer.
Several techniques exist to secure the washer/dryer stacking assembly.
First, you can use rubber damper pads that you attach to the feet of the dryer.
You may also already have an anti-vibration mat under your washer to prevent it from moving when it is spinning: it is possible to place it under the dryer to ensure its stability.
Invest in an all-in-one washer-dryer combo
Choosing the right washer-dryer duo can be a real challenge, whether you want to shop for new appliances or replace your old models.
Sometimes we don’t have the necessary space. We are a bit lost with the different brands (Maytag, Samsung, LG, Kenmore, Whirlpool, Bosch, Electrolux, etc.). Our lack of space limits our choice.
If the latter, an all-in-one washer-dryer might be your best bet!
What are the benefits of investing in an all-in-one set?
An all-in-one washer dryer also called a laundry center, comprises a top-loading washer on the bottom and a front-loading dryer.
They are made to be superimposed and not placed independently of each other.
Because of this, these machines are much more compact than a full-size stackable washer and dryer.
The main advantage lies in the superposition of the two appliances, which makes your laundry room more compact, perfect for small apartments or homes without a basement.
What are the important features to check before buying?
As with any washer-dryer combo, size and capacity are two critical factors.
In addition, it will also be necessary to check the functions and controls of the model.
A humidity sensor, for example, monitors humidity levels and automatically turns off the dryer to reduce energy consumption and prevent wear and tear on clothes.
If responsible energy consumption is important to you, choose an Energy Star qualified model.
Also, check if your appliance is powered by gas or electricity.
For an appliance with an electric dryer, check the voltage required and ensure it is compatible with the outlet.
It will also be necessary to measure the space and choose a model accordingly.
What you must remember
Stacking a washer and a dryer guarantees real space-saving in your home!
However, it is essential to choose compatible devices, that is to say, that comes from the same manufacturer: the superposition will be easier.
